Linear Lighting-the “Make-up” for Space

Jul 04,2017

Light is to space what air is to life

The interweaving of light and darkness endows the space with soul

Strip Light

Space, like people’s face, needs “make-up”, while lighting is the most magic “make-up”. And we, Ledmy, is a supplier of the most professional linear lighting “make-up”.

The highest state of lighting design is that not only the space looks elegant and light, but that the sense of layer in the space is strengthened. Among all these magic lighting “make-ups”, strip light is most favored by designers. Now, many designers spontaneously choose “strip light” when making interior design, as its occurrence enhances the sense of layer in the interior environment and enriches lighting environment.

However, many proprietors would often ask the designers: “why Do you use strip light in your design? Because not only the project cost increases, but maintenance needs to be considered. Will strip light cause light pollution? And will this look good?”

Yet, Many people do not know that who first uses this design method and why this design?

Richard Kelly and Philip Johnson first put forward the concept of “Light Washing”, namely the practice of illuminating the wall evenly with many hidden light sources.

They first used the concept of “Tower of Light” in the lighting design of Seagram Building (designed with Mies van der Rohe as the head), which brought about very clean and elegant effects from the rough and porous limestone.

From then on, the design technique of “Lighting Washing” was adopted till now. One of the lighting techniques most favored by the designers is to hide the strip light in the suspended ceiling, in the wall or in the ground to bring out the contour of the space.

Endow space with soul

In simple-style design, strip light can make the interior space more stylish.

Strip light not only beautifies the environment, but increases the dynamics of the space and makes the space brighter as supplementary lighting.

The strip light inside the cabinet can brighten the interior of the cabinet, while the bright lines create a feeling of sky, making the cabinet space more dimensional and adding a finishing touch.

The combination of strip light and shelves is not only practical, but produces great lighting effects, highlighting the dimensional space.

Now, many designers are quite expert in the technique of “Light Washing”, but they may not understand well the principles behind this. Next, let us have a look at Richard Kelly’s three principles in using light.

Richard Kelly

1.Focal Glow
2.Ambient Luminescence
3.Sparkling of Brilliants

The lighting design at the Four Season Restaurant of Seagram Building, an elaborate work of Richard Kelly, well interprets these three principles: the strip lighting for washing wall brings out the veneer of the rough surface. The combination of the downlight and ceiling light forms the download main lighting, which produces sparkling spots through the reflection of the pool and the tree shadows.

Focal Glow

Focal glow means that places which needs accent lighting must be very bright. These places include commodities, steps at the stairway and canopy in the hotel lobby...

Strip lights under the handrail not only highlights the dimensional sense of the staircase space, but provides lighting in the staircase.

Ambient Luminescence

Ambient luminescence is just like the glows from the open fields and the shimmer in the morning after snow.
In the evening, the water in the pond reflects the setting sun. Though the environment does not produce light directly, it changes the light. Ambient luminescence can form a kind of “Concealed Illumination”.

Sparkling of Brilliants

The sparkling brilliance is just like sprays in the stream, a beam of ray formed when the sunshine runs through the window of the house, candles in the banquet and spots of the crystal light, all of which, dynamic, colorful and varied, can stimulate people’s nerves.

The reason most designers often use strip light is: to enhance indirect lighting, remove dark area, reduce glare and enrich space layers. Yet, no matter how the modern design changes, the light using principles of Kelly are still observed.

Strip light can be made into various shape and in different lengths. Indirect lighting without main light emphasizes more on the creation of atmosphere apart from lighting the space. The unique sticky and hidden feature of strip light can give life-loving people more surprises. Meanwhile, strip light can be hidden in the ceiling, wall or ground to highlight the contour of the space, which is well in line with another aim of lighting, namely to realize the sense of layer and dimension.

The magic strip light not only simply applies a foundation to the space, but adds a sense of dynamic to the space.

Words fail to express the beauty of linear lighting. Ledmy is dedicated to brining forward R&D of linear lighting, to cooperating with many lighting designers to create a clean and bright lighting environment and to providing the best LED linear lighting products to families and even the whole city space.
